Skating officials, or referees, monitor gameplay, score points, and assign penalties. SOs must be well-versed in WFTDA game rules and procedures, and must demonstrate competency on skates.
SOs are invited to pay monthly membership dues to attend and participate in team practices. They are invited to participate in non-rink team events at no cost.
SO positions:
Inner pack ref: generally game head referee; tracks pack formation
Jam ref x2: follows and scores one team's jammer
Outside pack ref x3: monitors front, middle, or rear of the pack for penalties
All games are staffed by a minimum of 2 medics. Medics may be RNs, EMTs, or other personnel trained in general first response. Gameplay may not commence unless a medic has eyes on the gameplay.
Non-skating officials, or NSOs, facilitate gameplay by monitoring players' positions, timing and recording penalties, and maintaining the scores and game clocks. NSOs must be familiar in WFTDA game rules and procedures.
NSOs are invited to observe team practices at no cost. They are also invited to participate in non-rink team events at no cost, and can be trained on specific positions before game day(s) or on game day(s).
NSO positions:
Jam timer: maintains game and jam clocks and time-outs
Penalty/lineup tracker x2: records each line of skaters on the track; records each penalty a skater receives
Penalty box timer x2: times one team's penalties in the box
Penalty box manager: times the jammer's/jammers' penalty times; assists timers as needed
Scorekeeper x2: communicates with jam refs to record points
Scoreboard operator: controls the scoreboard in real time
Announcers entertain spectators and follow the progression of gameplay over a loudspeaker.
Miscellaneous volunteers are always needed to work tickets, merch, setup, breakdown, and more.
